Team GB Weston gymnasts win medals at World Cup competition

Last weekend saw the last competition of the year for Weston Aerobic Gymnastics Great Britain squad gymnasts.

The club sent eight gymnasts, two national coaches and head of delegation as part of the 31-strong Great Britain team to Bulgaria for the Plovdiv World Cup and open.

First up in a field of 63 competitors was Jasmine Dight competing in the National Development (10-11 year) category. Jasmine performed her creative routine beautifully with excellent transitions to qualify for finals in fourth place. The finals saw Jasmine up her game to bring home the silver medal.

Next up against 78 international competitors were 12-year-old Lola Lawrence and 13-year-old Nancy Law in the Group 1 (12-14 year) category.

Lola is one of the youngest competitors in this category and is known for her elegant Frozen-inspired routine. She performed her best routines to date qualifying in third position and winning the bronze medal in the finals.

Nancy performed a graceful routine pleasing the GBR coaches, however a small error saw her miss out on a place in finals.

Individual male Lewis Harvey competed for the last time in the Group 1 category with a strong performance, but he narrowly missed qualifying for finals becoming a reserve instead.

The Group 1 trio of Nancy Law, Seren Jones and Katie Ferris were next up in a category of 30 and performed their fun Wonderland routine to combine big skills and unique interactions to qualify for finals in fifth position. The finals saw them finish in sixth place.

Nancy, Seren and Katie then joined forces with Lola and Molly Brown to compete for the last time as five-team in the Group 1 category.

A spectacular performance from the girls saw them qualify to finals in first place, unfortunately in the finals a small error on skills cost them the gold medal, but with a strong performance and impressive choreography they managed to stay in a medal position, finishing their run with a bronze medal.

The final GBR competitor for Weston was Isidora Vucicevic in the Group 2 (15-17 year) category up against 47 international competitors. Isidora performed a clean elegant routine to score her highest international score to date.

Weston are delighted to have such a large representation in the British squad and with two of the national coaching team working at the club, the success continues at all levels.

The club is calling for the support of the local community to help win funding as part of the Aviva Community Fund 2018.

They are relying on votes to increase their chances of winning funding of up to £5,000 which they hope will enable them to extend their gym facilities and offer more gym classes. Only projects with the most votes will become finalists, so additional support is vital.

The club is a not-for-profit family-run club that was founded more than 20 years ago. They provide an accessible and inclusive sport, offering opportunities for boys and girls of all abilities, levels and ethnic groups to participate in gymnastics training within a controlled learning environment.

The club has a record of excellence, winning medals at regional, national and international level.

Club manager and head coach Debbie Saunders said: “We have many children on our waiting list and we would love to extend our facilities to enable us to offer more recreational classes.

“Many of our elite gymnasts, including those who have gone on to win world championship medals, started with us when they were three or four years old. The funding from Aviva could make this a reality for us sooner.”
